Comparison Between IT and ITIS

IT and ITIS. The twins of the outsourcing world. One refers to Information Technology, the other IT Infrastructure Services. Most of us often get confused as to which is exactly what, which will propel our career to the highway of success faster. Coming to the basic facts, both have their very core base as information technology. That means the underlying technologies and skill-sets that are required for the functioning of both the systems are the very same. The only thing that will vary is the job role and the activities related to the particular role. The organization TCS has recently stepped into this ITIS territory and so TCS ITIS is a clear top notch player in this field now.

Basic Difference
The core difference stems from the fact that ITIS is a service type job role, the other is a not so well-defined job role, i.e. IT will include virtually from anything starting from development to testing and might even have some of the related tasks in ITIS. Tasks in ITIS form a sub-set in IT in a way. Let’s say people who are in support activities at present in the IT field, you can well compare them to their corresponding counterpart in the ITIS field who are providing a similar application support. So it cannot be said that those who work in IT are straightaway in a better position.

The Technical Catch

The catch lies in the fact that even though they originate from the same base, their basic functionality largely differs. An ITIS profile in most of the cases will be service oriented. There will be systems that needs maintenance and support and hence superior quality ITIS teams will need to provide quality service to the vendor. Occasionally there might be full scale developments in case the vendor requests for something new. But in IT, it’s all too generic. It cannot be said that the works will be more on development, or more on testing or maintenance. It can be anything and everything depending upon the requirements of the client. Some people say that it varies a lot based on the particular city, but that seldom is the case. So as you can see, ITIS apparently though might seem to be a smaller subset of service work of IT, is not the actual case. It’s in fact a modified version of the maintenance and service tasks of the IT with it’s own blend and flavor. It is not non-technical support activities of IT in a new form at all.

Beginning Your Career In ITIS

Like any new field, ITIS also had it’s own set of uncertainties among the minds of the people who got selected for it. There have had been no precedence which they could gather from their seniors who have worked in this field. But it was a position you could not refuse since it came from the biggest organizations in the world with some of the finest packages.

But I do not see any cause for concern as this field will offer you immense opportunities to learn starting from Java to Cloud Computing. It will never disappoint one with the urge to learn and grow. You can start right now with some books and be assured that your study will not go in vain. You can always come back to core IT companies after spending some time in your ITIS role. So put that smile back on your face.

The Final Verdict

ITIS is a new venture in the world of outsourcing by new companies. It is destined to grow beyond it’s visible opportunities. There will be growing demand for skilled technical people in this sector. It will be always different from core IT in the ways that I have mentioned above, but it will never be far from it. Do you have any opinion or doubt that you want to ask? Feel free to comment below.

  2. How is the growth in TCS if I as a fresher join in ITIS? If I were a Btech graduate, and been given ITIS, would i get into Help Desk ???

    1. Growth in TCS is Good for freshers....it also depends on which domain u r entering....try to enter into domain of ur interest....
You won't get into helpdesk by default....they first ask u and explain u about it...if u like then u can join....but I suggest not to join helpdesk as fresher....rest ur choice....

    1. Riya.... ITIS is now a days as good as development. But yes non-engineering background guys are also got selected into ITIS. The big difference come when you get aligned to any field in ITIS like in database, or in server management, etc.
It will show how well you understand the issue and revert it back with good solution.
One more point worth mentioning is that "You make any field good or bad" and also you can change it later on if you are not getting anything good in support as per your interest.

    1. It totally depends on your educational background and service experience (if any) and most importantly your area of interest, in which you want to grow.
It is not true that everyone gets computers and OS installation. Many gets DB, customer handling, customer coordination and other if they like. So, keep on hunting your interest.

  8. i have a offer from TCS ITIS .But during the interview they said its a Service Desk job profile.
i come from a networking background and have got few certifications in my domain and i am really interested in working in the networking/it infrastructure domain since i have got a knack for this stuff. But what i am concerned about is the poor feedback about tcs when it comes to freshers, their pay which equals to null (the package offered to me is extremely low) and the profile which is offered to me(as i seriously doubt if at all there is something to learn and grow)..the interviewer said that all those who are being hired in this profile will be taking calls and provide basic troubleshooting to the clients of tcs. Now what i want to ask is should i take this offer. is this like working in a call center under the brand name of tcs. what should i do ? please advise me on this and kindly explain what itis service desk is all about ..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Joy....if u ask me whether to join tcs or not??....Then I must say join TCS because u r getting brand name as TCS against ur name in ur profile. For package, I will say that nearly all top IT firm in India will offer similar package as far as I know....little difference come from ur geographic location and ur graduation stream (be/btech/bsc/etc).
If u r interested in networking profile then tell them u r comfortable in same and don't want to join service desk.
As far as I know TCS is very flexible with associates and give u lot of opportunity to grow.
So my advice is to talk with HR or any contact person who is responsible for such allocation (if fresher) and tell them ur concern. They will surely help u.
All the best and keep growing!!!!

    1. It is totally your choice....my advice to go ahead....but ITIS is a support job not call center job....also u can tell them u don't want to join service desk as u want to be in technical profile and u have interest in that.... or if u have any other better offer than this....then it will be purely ur choice.
      All the best!!!!

  10. I have an offer from TCS in ITIS domain..I am really skeptical about ITIS as per the reviews I have heard from TCS seniors..this field is relatively new and considered inferior to IT in terms of work..some IT people even refer to it as a BPO job which has put my hopes down..I would like to know how is this going to affect the growth opportunities and if at all I plan to switch to any other company after gaining some experience in the ITIS field ,will the ITIS tag decrease my chances?
    Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Saloni....ITIS was new few years ago but now it is good choice for many. You can't compare ITIS as inferior to IT because both have different scope of action. Also, I want to tell you one thing TOTALLY MY WORDS (which you can say to those who are saying these) and that is "IF YOU DON'T HAVE 'ITIS' TO SUPPORT 'IT' THEN AFTER SOMETIME 'IT' WILL VANISH BECAUSE EVERY GOOD THING IN LIFE NEEDS GOOD BACKUP AND SUPPORT WHICH OUR 'ITIS' DO'S".
Honestly speaking, ITIS is not a BPO job. But yes do definitely need to have sound knowledge & power of understanding the issue and resolving them within assigned time is a big challenge, then being an IT guy who develops once and give it to client & after that don't come into picture if anything went wrong. So, keeping everything on track and making client to work in good environment is the job of ITIS team.
Also, there is only one service desk team (in most of the projects) whose job is to picks-up and route calls. For rest of the teams (in project) their is only less chance to get direct call.
Any growth opportunity depends on your performance (and on your manager). Also, if you want to switch after getting experience then your will get appreciation as per market standard. But, if you are changing domain then it will be totally depends on hiring company that what they want to give you.
      Best of Luck....

    1. Hi,
If you are working in networking profile then look for it or something similar to it because it is one of the good profile.
As far as TCS is concerned, you will get good brand name under your belt for which you worked and also, it will give you good opportunity in TCS if you want to change your profile (depending on manager and concerned person).
If you say about Resident Engineer profile in TCS I have a mixed opinion. Because in this profile you can get chance to work in different technologies (like networking, server-side responsibility, etc.) or may be sticked with only one role. Also, you can get chance to work for different projects at the same time for it's setup or may be sticked with only one project. Also, it contains some technical role with client handling technique too. So, there are many if's and but's.
I think it is not the good time to comment on it's future aspects because it varies from company to company and also location to location (depending under whom you are getting chance).
So, KEEP YOURSELF CALM AND HEAR YOUR INNER VOICE and then based on your that take your decision. I'm telling you that it will be your one of the good decision. Best of Luck....

  12. Hi Gaurav,
I recently got offer letter from tcs after campus placements, the text was as follows:

"(This offer is based on your profile and performance in the selection process. You have been selected for the position of Assistant System Engineer-Trainee in Grade Y. You will be assigned a role in the IT Infrastructure Services (ITIS) Unit, which is subject to change as per the business requirements of TCSL.)"

Is this a Service desk related job??i didnt want to enter that..
they asked me about setting up networks(as i did Linux system administration training from CDAC)..
is there any Cloud computing,Big Data analytics or Linux related work in ITIS?
and will i'll be able to change the profile to IT later.
    Thanks in advance..

    1. Hi Navpreet,

Congratulation for getting selected into TCS....

First of all, as per the statement "(This offer is based........)" , it is not clear that they are asking you to join Service desk related job. They (TCS) are asking you to join ITIS unit which have many roles including service desk role, database admin role, etc.

Secondly, in TCS you will be assigned to any role only after completing ILP training successfully. So, I can't comment on this that what role you are getting unless and until it is explicitly mentioned, it is totally TCS decision. But, yes there is a scope of Linux system administration, database administration, etc. in ITIS. As ITIS is an evolving unit, so there is a lot of scope.

Also, you it is possible to change your profile to IT later on for which you need to contact respective person after joining TCS.

      Keep Rocking!!!!

    1. Hi Arnab,

Accenture indeed is a good company. But growth in accenture ITIS is slow (or depends on projects). For freshers especially it is slow (and can be otherwise depends on project) and for laterals it is medium paced/steady (again based on project).

Joining decision must be yours. Keep Rocking!!!!

TCS hr can comment better on this but yes for Linux admin profile I must say it is one of the good profile. You can request HR to hire you directly on TCS payroll instead of third party payroll and also have this confirmation before joining.

  16. Hello sir,
I have been selected in TCS ITIS for the post of Graduate Trainee in grade YG. What does YG refer to? I am also confused whether to accept the offer. I am good at programming skills and i dont like to work in call centres and help desk. I find this is taking me far from my core. And also a bond for two years needs to be signed which clearly states that i cannot leave the company even if i wanted to. Can i go ahead with the offer or wait for any better? And will there be night shifts and transfers from current city in TCS ITIS as stated in the terms and conditions of the offer letter ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is totally your decision whether you have to join TCS or not. But yes, if you are interested in programming then discuss with HR. Because if you get into one role (like into call centres/helpdesk) then you have to be there atleast one or one-n-a-half year.

You can get all this benefits like transfer of city (if there is possibility) and change of role, etc. Also, you may have to work in night shifts (depending upon projects).

So, I am suggesting you to clarify all your doubts with authorities of respective company before taking any decision. Keep Going!!!!

    1. Hi Mahesh,

YG is a grade given by many companies (including TCS) to trainees. This can be based on role and domain in which they are placing you. Regarding this please get in touch with support desk of TCS, they will help you to clear all your doubts.

As far as role assignment is totally decided by company based on their internal decisions. And yes you can change your domain from IT to ITIS and from ITIS to IT, as per your interest.
